Gay Budapest Guide: Saunas, Baths and Beaches

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Budapest is a city rich in thermal baths and beaches. Before modern gay businesses flourished in Budapest, the baths, especially the Gellert, the Rác and the Király bath were basically 100% Budapest gay venues, and the bath authorities were more then happy to look the other way (although they never allowed the Budapest's gay associations to place condom machines in baths of Budapest :D). Today in Budapest, you'll still want to visit the baths if you are looking to relax in magical surroundings, but don't expect much gay action.

Summer time offers the opportunity to catch some rays at municipal beaches. Beaches are great places to meet gay guys in Budapest or just enjoy eye candy. Read our guide to find the right one for you.

Finally, you can find typical gay sauna action in Budapest at Magnum sauna.

A. Gellért
Budapest, 11th district, Kelenhegyi út 4.
Telephone: (36-1) 466-6166

A secession dream with a bath, indoor swimming pool and outdoor complex. The Gellért termal bath offers wellness, finish sauna, massage. One of the must see "baths" in Budapest and a nice way to spend a late summer afternoon (more quiet and posh then the other public beaches).

B. Széchényi
Budapest, 14th district, Állatkerti krt. 11.
Telephone: (36-1) 363-3210

Another "turn of the century" bath in Budapest. Famous for its outdoor pools which can be enjoyed during the winter. Has a men's nudist part which is fairly gay. Tends to be overcrowded sometimes, and the lack of grass makes it a little bit barren.

C. Rudas
Budapest, 1st district, Döbrentei tér 9.
Telephone: (36-1) 356-1322

Old Turkish bath which has been recently renovated. The bath is popular with some gays, but have to be very discreet.

D. Király
Budapest, 2nd district, Fő u. 84.
Telephone: (36-1) 202-3688

The Kiraly bath was the last real "gay" bath in Budapest, but since having been made co-educated, little is known about its gay "cruising" factor.

B. Széchényi
Budapest, 14th district, Állatkerti krt. 11.
Telephone: (36-1) 363-3210

The Széchényi bath is a favourite beach in summer. You can find a men's nudist part which is fairly gay and very good choice. Tends to be overcrowded sometimes.

C. Csillaghegyi
Budapest, 3rd district, Pusztakúti út 3.
Telephone: (36-1) 250-1533

Beach located between downtown Budapest and Szentendre. Some gays on top of the grounds, but, unless you are staying close to it, or want to tie it in with a visit to Szentendre, just stick with Palatinus or Széchényi.

D. Omszki tó (lake)
Artifical lake between Budapest and Szentendre. Some gays at one corner of the lake. Friendly but nudism is not allowed. Recommended, if you want a trip outside of Budapest or a visit to Szentendre with HEV.
